The Driving Theory Test, set by the DVSA, is a mandatory computer-based exam that assesses your knowledge of key driving concepts, road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. Passing this test is an essential step before booking your practical driving test.

To pass the theory test, you must achieve:
✅ 43/50 on the multiple-choice section
✅ 44/75 on the hazard perception section
If you fail one section, you must retake both after a mandatory 3-day waiting period.
Plan for around 2 hours in total, including registration, practice questions, and receiving your results.
Yes! You can take your theory test as soon as you turn 17 (or 16 for those receiving the enhanced mobility component of PIP). Many learners prefer to pass the theory test before starting practical lessons to build confidence and understanding of road rules.
Tip: You must have a provisional licence to book your theory test. Apply up to 3 months before your 17th birthday.
